Extended Notice on Cookies

(last updated:: 29/02/2016)

Introduction: What are cookies and why are they used?

A cookie is a text file that a website sends to the device (computer, mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet) of the users who have visited it. Cookies are stored in such device before being re-sent to the website when the user visits it again. Cookies may be categorized:

  • based on the subject who installs them on the user’s device, depending on whether such subject also manages the website that is being visited (so-called "first-party cookies") or another website installs the cookies through the former website (so-called "third-party cookies");
  • according to the purpose served by each cookie: some cookies enable the website that has installed them to memorize, for example, some of the choices made by users when browsing, or allow the users to make purchases, or authorize access to reserved areas (the so called "technical cookies"). Other cookies allow the users' browsing choices to be tracked by the website that installs them, also in order to send advertisements and/or offer services that are in line with the user’s preferences (so-called "profiling cookies"). Only profiling cookies need the user’s consent prior to their use.
